Live forecasts update automatically; written guidance last reviewed 23 June 2026 by the Down Under Brief Weather Desk. Data from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and other national met services via Open-Meteo.

If you’re in Queensland, New South Wales or Victoria today, check your local warnings — severe storms and heavy rain are forecast. The Bureau of Meteorology issues warnings when conditions threaten life or property, so staying informed is your first line of defence.

What is a weather warning?

A weather warning is an official alert from the Bureau of Meteorology when dangerous weather is expected. It covers events like severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and heatwaves. Warnings are colour-coded — yellow, amber, red for some hazards — or issued as specific severe thunderstorm warnings with detailed impact zones.

Which warnings are active across Australia today?

For Queensland, a super storm warning for QLD today is in effect for the southeast, with potential giant hail and destructive winds. New South Wales has weather warnings NSW today for heavy rain and possible coastal flooding. Victoria faces a severe weather warning Victoria today and a severe weather warning Victoria tomorrow for damaging winds in alpine regions. Always check the latest on BOM’s site or our Australia weather hub.

How do I know if a warning applies to me?

Use the BOM website or app, or check local news. Warnings are issued for specific districts — your postcode or town name will appear. Our severe weather warning page lists active alerts by state.

What should I do when a warning is issued?

Follow advice from emergency services. Secure loose items, avoid driving through floodwaters, and stay indoors during storms. For real-time updates, use weather radar to track approaching cells.

Are warnings issued for all types of weather?

No — only for hazardous conditions that pose a risk to life or property. Routine forecasts, such as a warm day, are not warnings. The BOM distinguishes between “advice” and “warning” based on severity.
