A large trough is bringing severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and damaging winds across central and northern New South Wales today, with the highest risk from the Northern Tablelands down to the Hunter region. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for these areas, and conditions may persist into tomorrow.
Where are the severe storms hitting today?
The main threat for Wednesday stretches from the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands through to the Hunter and parts of the Central Tablelands. A severe thunderstorm warning NSW today covers places such as Lismore, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Scone and Singleton. Expect heavy rain that may cause flash flooding, large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 100 km/h. The storms are moving eastwards and will weaken tonight.
What about tomorrow — will the storms continue?
Yes. The trough will linger over eastern NSW on Thursday, triggering another round of severe thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm warning NSW tomorrow is likely for the same regions, with added risk for the Mid‑North Coast and parts of the Sydney basin. Be alert for storms developing from late morning through the afternoon. Check live radar on our weather radar page to track cells in real time.
Is there a severe thunderstorm warning for the Sydney area today?
No active warning for Sydney at this stage, but storms may reach western suburbs later in the afternoon. The main threat stays north and west of the city. Keep an eye on live radar updates.
Will the hail storm NSW today affect crops or property?
Yes. Hailstones up to 5 cm are forecast for the Northern Tablelands and Hunter. This can damage vehicles, roofs and crops. Farmers should move stock to shelter and secure loose items.
